Google Reader gets a new look

Google Reader comparison

A few weeks ago Google updated Gmail to allow users to choose colorful themes for their email service. The move left some of us wondering when Google Reader was going to get a similar facelift. Apparently today is the day, but the change isn’t exactly what I had expected.

Google has rolled out a new look for its RSS reader. There’s a lot more white space, and a lot less blue. But there’s no way to customize the color scheme.

Probably the best part of the new design is that you can collapse different sections in your sidebar to save space. Don’t care what items your friends have shared? Just select the “hide unread counts” button. Hate the fact that every time you log into your account you’re greeted with a reminder that you have over 1000 unread items to catch up on? You can collapse that section too.

I happened to have Google Reader open when the changeover occurred, so I was able to grab the screenshot above showing the old new design on the left and the old Google Reader interface on the left. Honestly, found the old version familiar and comforting like a favorite blanket. But I’m sure I’ll get used to the new version soon. Getting rid of that 1000+ unread item count will certainly help.

thanks Stuart!

Only a few people can claim to be experts at any game. In the world of Forza Motorsport 2, Project Blackjack are experts. One year in the making, The Rising Storm showcases some of the most incredible precision drifting we’ve ever seen in any game. The team of twelve gamers from around the world compiled the nearly 10 minute montage in hopes to showcase what they call, “The Art of Drifting.” We think of it as, “The Art of Insane Crap We’ll Never Come Close To Doing.”

It’s been a long time since I have genuinely enjoyed an episode of American McGee’s Grimm. That’s not to say that any have been terrible, but rather that the formula seems to have run its course. American McGee’s Grimm: Iron John doesn’t stray far from the established mechanics of the series, but the way it deviates from the titular fairy tale, as well as how the world changes based on direct player interaction, makes it an enjoyable casual adventure.

We admit it, the only reason we embedded the video above is because we knew it would make people pay attention to this post. No one ever reads these anyway. We could type almost anything in this space and no one would notice. Froodlegarb. Dunglesnout. See? Completely unnoticed. More suitors for Eidos?

It would seem that there are quite a few companies interested in getting their hands on the newly renamed Eidos. The UK company which officially changed its name from its previous SCi earlier this week, was rumored to be courted by both Electronic Arts and Ubisoft.

Now MCV is reporting through unnamed sources that two more companies are getting interested. One is Warner Bros Interactive which already owns 20 percent of Eidos. The article states it would “only” take $30 million for Warner Bros. Interactive to purchase the rest of the stock. The other company in play is Japanese-based Square Enix who has been making more entries into Western game publishing, including last month’s surprise announcement that it would be publishing Supreme Commander 2. Who will be the winner? We should know something soon.

Daniel Jalkut over at Red Sweater Software has updated crossword puzzle software Black Ink to version 1.1.3, which adds new puzzle sources and fixes some bugs.

The Little Rock Daily Record stopped publishing its crossword puzzle online, but Jalkut added crosswords from the Chicago Reader, Onion AV Club, and Chronicle of Higher Education to replace it. The update also addresses bugs with puzzle opening and printing.

The update is available from Red Sweater’s website, or from within the application.

Also, on his blog, Jalkut mentioned forthcoming updates to MarsEdit, after working with Tumblr to improve their API. He plans to release an update, version 2.3 with Tumblr support, “as soon as possible.”

You may recall that Safari has a debug menu that enables some hidden features, but did you know Address Book also has a debug menu?

In Address Book’s debug menu, you can get options for logging, controls for metadata, printing selections, and removing orphaned images. You can enable this debug menu by typing the following command into Terminal.app (/Applications/Utilities):

defaults write com.apple.addressbook ABShowDebugMenu -bool YES

If you no longer wish to have this menu hanging around, you can remove it by typing the same command above, but replace “YES” with “NO.”

I don’t often have dreams, but when I do they tend to be a bit on the Eraserhead / Andalusian Dog side of things. Thankfully, DreamCrowd provides me a way to stumble out of bed and try to get a quick handle on what exactly my subconscious mind was trying to tell me.

Submit your text on DreamCrowd’s home page and enter your text, title and tag your dream, and enter the spam-prevention code characters. Hopefully it’ll work a bit better for you – I had to try four times even though I matched the code every time.

Still, once it does work and your dream is submitted, DreamCrowd does a good job of picking out key terms and provides Dream Interpretation 101-esque descriptions of their significance. The site is no replacement for a professional opinion, but it’s an amusing and useful way to gain some insight.

American McGee’s Grimm: The Golden Goose takes a few steps along the road of innovation paved by this season’s debut episode, The Master Thief — a road that hasn’t been walked since, in fact. But have gameplay components been rearranged enough to warrant playing yet another Grimm episode that, while cheap, has done little to differentiate one episode from any other? Actually, yes; but the result is an equal mix of delight and aggravation.

Left 4 Dead Guide: Showing No Mercy

So you’ve bought Left 4 Dead, installed it, booted it up, and began a game with three of your best friends. But you are getting your ass kicked by the hordes of bloodthirsty zombies on the easiest difficulty setting. Not to fear! With our guide to the art (and zen) of zombie killing, you and your friends will be breakdancing through Hordes and dancing on cars with alarms in no time! Just try not to Take too long on your way through this guide. You wouldn’t want a horde of zombies or a Tank to attack you out of nowhere, now would you?

The first campaign in Left 4 Dead is the easiest, and for good reason. It’s the introduction to the rest of the game and the most played campaign, thanks to being the one most people played in the demo. It has a variety of environments, almost all of which are incredibly claustrophobic, and really lends itself well to massacring zombies in large quantities. So why would a guide be needed? Well, like any of the other, less familiar campaigns, you need to know where the good places are to succeed, even though it’s a relatively easy campaign.
