Three time Academy Award nominated actress Sigourney Weaver doesn’t seem to have a problem about doing voice roles for games based on her characters. But she clearly doesn’t want to do them just for the paycheck either. MTV Multiplayer has some quotes from Weaver about her (non) involvement with the upcoming games based on two of her most famous films; Ghostbusters and Aliens (she one one of her Oscar nods for the latter performance).

Weaver said at one point she was approached to voice her character of Ellen Ripley in an Aliens game (not the ones currently under development and to be published by Sega). However when she saw the actual game proposal she didn’t care for it, saying “Well you have Ripley killing aliens but also sick people and other marines! And every other word out of my mouth was a curse word. I’m not a nun or anything, but I said, ‘This is not true to the character.’”

And the Ghostbusters game from Atari that’s has involvement with most of the main cast but not Weaver? She stated, “I don’t think they even asked me to be a part of the [new] ‘Ghostbusters’ one. If they did I don’t remember it and maybe I was just busy.”

In our final piece of content for the launch of Prince of Persia we’ve compiled a video montage of the combat found in the game. Similar to Fable II, Prince of Persia is based on one-button combat with each face button controlling a different kind of attack. Swing your sword with ‘X,’ use the Gauntlet with ‘B,’ call on Elika with ‘Y,’ use acrobatics with ‘A’ and use button combos to attack from the air or with throws. Prince of Persia includes over 50 different combos that, when strung together, look beautiful and end with devastating results to your enemies. We’ve barely scratched the surface with this video and believe us when we say the combos can become extremely rewarding — there’s even an achievement for nailing a 14-hit combo.

Check out our launch week coverage of Prince of Persia including our extensive review.

First things first: as a new blogger around here, let me introduce myself. Hi, I’m Mel Martin. I spent most of my life as a journalist, then moved over to the technology side. I spent 4 years at the BBC working on creating a content management system.

I’m an avid amateur astronomer and have published many images taken from my home observatory. I’ve also written a book about film producer Samuel Bronston, who created epic films like El Cid, Fall of the Roman Empire, King of Kings and 55 Days at Peking. I participated in the recent DVD releases of two of the Bronston films, and shared in doing the commentary on the Fall of the Roman Empire DVD released in April. I’ve had Macs since 1984, the Apple II before that. Glad to be here, and hope I can share some interesting posts with you. And here we go….

There are lots of applications out there to deal with spam, but many run within or alongside the mail client itself, and that can be problematic when you are away from home and using limited bandwidth — you still have to download all the mail in order for your local filters to process it. My ISP offers POP mail, and does some filtering on the server side, but 30-40 spams still get through every day.

Spamsweep from Bains Software offers a nice solution that has largely gone unnoticed, although there was a brief mention of it here in 2005. Now, for people with iPhones or other smartphones, it is even more useful. Spamsweep is a small app that displays an icon in your menu bar. In my situation, it runs on my Mac Pro desktop at home, checking my mail account(s) once a minute. It downloads the spam, and leaves the good mail alone, ready to pass it on to any device while I am on the road, connected via a laptop or cell phone. The spam gets trapped and goes to spam heaven (or hell).

You can train it, of course, and go back through the list of spam to correct any errors, but there are darned few of them. A nice side benefit is that it keeps the spam off my iPhone. It works with several mail clients including Apple Mail, Eudora, Entourage, Mailsmith, Powermail and Thunderbird. Those connections to your mail app are important only if you want Spamsweep to launch your mail client after it checks for spam. I don’t use it in that mode, so Spamsweep quietly spends the day obediently checking my POP mail account and cleaning out the garbage. It is great when I travel, and when I get home I can check to see if there are any good messages (false positives) that got trapped. That almost never happens; if Spamsweep is unsure, it passes the mail through.

Support from the company has been very good, and there are usually a few updates per year adding some features and tightening up the code. It’s a great solution for keeping spam vanquished when you travel, and really keeps your iPhone (or lesser device) clean.

Of course, a spam message could sneak in if your phone checks your mail server right before Spamsweep has done its check, but in the real world I only see that happen a couple of times a week, and of course during that week Spamsweep has snagged hundreds of messages I never want to see.

And for the first time, the Autoblog team (well, two of us) will be in attendance. We’ll be departing at the crack of dawn tomorrow, with press passes, cameras, VitaminEnergy drinks and long underwear in tow, to bring you the action live throughout the weekend. While talking up better-than-expected Black Friday sales at a Reuters Media Summit in New York, Take-Two Chief Executive Strauss Zelnick took a moment to tackle the global financial situation and its effect on the games industry. “I think everyone was encouraged by Black Friday,” Zelnick said. “It was better than expectations, but it’s pretty hard these days — being slightly down is the new up.”

However, the Men’s Fitness flexer refused to label the situation as a “financial crisis,” opting instead for an intricate allegory from the Hideo Kojima School of Convoluted Comparison. “We’re still seeing the car crash, and the ambulences [sic] are still showing up at the scene,” he posited. “Maybe we’re in the emergency room, but we’re not even in the intensive care unit yet for a lot of these companies. But they will get there.”

But do we have an appropriate health plan? Are we under a general anesthetic? How long is the organ donor list? When we flatline, will we be haunted by the ghosts of all the kids we bullied at school?

Click above for a high-res gallery of the 1954 Dodge Firearrow III Sport Concept

The annual auctions in Arizona are a little more than a month away, and RM has put together an impressive lineup of vehicles that will be crossing the block. The highlight will probably be an original 1963 Corvette Grand Sport, but two 1950′s show cars should grab some attention as well. The first is a Dodge Firearrow III Sport Concept that made its debut at the 1954 Detroit Auto Show (you might also remember the Firearrow II and IV convertibles that sold at Barrett-Jackson in 2007). The concept was Chrysler’s answer to the soon-to-be Ford Thunderbird and Chevrolet Corvette and was fully functional down to the roll up windows. So functional, in fact, that it broke a closed-course record of 143.44 mph at Chrysler’s proving grounds that that year. The car was restored to show condition in the early 90′s, and after being exhibited at numerous museums around the country, it is being offered for sale for the first time in more than 20 years with bids expected to exceed the one million dollar mark.

The second vehicle, known as the Saturn ‘Bob Hope Special’, is a one-off custom built in 1950 at a reported cost of $12,000. The car is built on a modified Mercury chassis and features handmade bodywork and a dashboard reminiscent of an airplane cockpit with 32 individual controls. Legendary entertainer Bob Hope fell in love with the car, and even planned to include it in one of his movies. While the movie didn’t pan out, Hope continued to drive the car around Hollywood giving the car its name. More details on both cars in the press release after the jump, and beautiful high-res photos of both cars courtesy of RM Auctions can be found in the galleries below.

Sling Media’s Slingbox Pro HD arrived with lofty expectations, and while the box handled its core tasks reasonably well, we found it to have some issues on the software side. The good news there is that software is modifiable, which means Sling could definitely improve matters in the near future. To that end, we’re interested to see how you’d change the high-def-capable placeshifter. Any bugs you want knocked out? Any particular hardware traits you aren’t fond of? Is it simply too difficult for your mother-in-law to get working? Sound off below! You never know — someone important may be listening.

We’ve been playing the Resident Evil 5 demo all day and, because we love you, we’ve thrown together a video of our impressions. There is is, sitting at the top of this post, just for you. Watch, enjoy, learn about the solid gameplay and the somewhat frustrating inventory system. Do it for yourself, your friends, but definitely do not do it for the children. It’s an M rated game, after all.

Look, we’re lazy. We’re content to wait for the Resident Evil 5 demo to come to us. X3F? Sure, our Xbox brethren are lazy, too. But they’re also fanboys. And fanboys leap at the chance to play anything — no matter what the cost (in this case, a 48-hour Xbox Live trial code) — before the other guys. So, without further ado … (here’s the part where you press “play.”)
