This week is the last one in 2008 that will likely have a lot of major gaming news but Big Download still has lots of plans to cover the past year and looking ahead to 2009 in the next several days. In the meantime let’s look at the highlights from the past week:
Exclusive features

Thanks to your suggestions, last month we added a Google Calendar after the jump so you can bookmark it and constantly receive updates as we add them. We appreciate all of your input and hope you find our calendar a useful tool. We also appreciate your comments listing events we might have overlooked or that are just near-and-dear to your hearts.
Highlights for January include the North American International Auto Show, which we will be covering extensively from Detroit; the Arizona collectible car auctions featuring Barrett-Jackson, RM Auctions, Russo and Steele and others; the La Jolla Motorcar Classic at The Cove; the Cavallino Classic from The Breakers in Palm Beach, Florida; and the kickoff of the 2009 motorsports season with the Rolex 24 at Daytona.
As always, we want to give a shoutout to our two favorite sources; The New York Times automotive calendar for national and international stuff, and for local stuff here in Southern California, our buddy Dave Lindsay’s SoCalCarCulture pages. Dave’s photographic coverage of these local events is fantastic. So check out the January event calendar we put together for you after the jump and start adding to it. Happy New Year, everyone!

With the final character announced for the console version of Street Fighter IV — it was Rose, by the way — the final roster for the anticipated title rounds out to a robust 25 fighters. Looking for a quick guide? The fine folks at Joystiq have compiled a gallery introducing (and in a lot of cases reintroducing) gamers to the entire ragtag list of world fighters. Complete with our usual brand of wit, the gallery features some interesting screenshots like the one above featuring Blanka in a Jungle Adventurer outfit. Jump into the gallery below and get to know your street fighters!

One of the many, many free-to-play MMOs in development is Dungeon Party. The developer of the game, Cyanide Studio, has now released some new screenshots of the game, showing off more of its cartoony-like art style and attitude.
According to the developer, the game will allow players pick from six character classes and then battle in teams of five players against another team searching for treasure with a number of traps and monsters to deal with in each round. There’s still no word on how the game will gain revenue but it is still expected to launch in the first quarter of 2009.

A few months ago, a teaser appeared for a new Mac OS X font management app, Fontcase, developed by Pieter Omvlee and with an UI design by Laurent Baumann. Fontcase is designed to replace Apple’s Font Book utility, which is not only a mediocre font management app, but has a less than nuanced interface.
For the last several months, Fontcase has been in private beta. Today, subscribers to the Fontcase newsletter were invited to download the latest beta. The app is very close to completetion, with a release date scheduled for sometime mid-January 2009, after Macworld. I used a few version of Fontcase while it was in private beta, and as a typography nut, have really been looking forward to this release.
First off, the interface is just beautiful. This won’t be surprising to anyone who has seen Laurent’s work in the past, but it is worth mentioning because of just how elegant and Mac-like the application feels. I think I’ve used almost every font manager available for OS X and Fontcase is certainly the most attractive.
When you open Fontcase, you are given the option to import your System and user fonts (basically everything that is already in Font Book). If you use Linotype’s FontExplorer X , you can also import sets and meta-data directly from that application. You can share font collection via Bonjour to other computers on your network.

Though we heard a number of reports on Thursday stating otherwise, it seems that TimeSplitters and Haze developer Free Radical has yet to shuffle off this mortal coil. Things are apparently not as grim as the initial reports suggested — well, okay, they were recently refused entry into their office, and have officially gone into “administration”, which many would consider quite grim indeed. However, if the most recent report on the matter is to be believed, all hope is not lost for the once-Rad developer.
According to an employee at ReSolve, the administrator for Free Radical, there’s already been a great deal of interest shown from publishers who want to purchase the developer, acquiring their assets and (remaining) employees. This interest largely stems from two undisclosed projects the developer had under their wing during their collapse, which many believe to be new entries into the Timesplitters and Star Wars Battlefront franchises. The rumored involvement of Battlefront is enough for us to hold out hope for an old-fashioned Christmas miracle.

Sure, the Xbox Live Arcade has FPS classics we spent much of our youth playing against others. DOOM, Duke Nukem 3D, Marathon: Durandal … but the service is still sorely missing a fast-paced action shooter (Sup, Quake?). Thanks to Ubisoft the wait may be over in the form of Cellfactor: Psychokinetic Wars — a “fast paced” multiplayer shooter — hitting the XBLA and PSN in early 09.
The upcoming Arcade FPS, developed by Immersion Games, throws players into an arena to do battle with their choice of gunfire and/or telekinetic superpowers. You know, because guns aren’t deadly enough these days.
Psychokinetic Wars will offer 30 single-player “challenges,” three playable characters and four multiplayer modes (Death Match, Team Death Match, Capture the Flag and Assault) for up to 16 players. Cellfactor: Psychokinetic Wars should also change its ridiculous name. Cellfactor is plenty, the rest is just marketing research gone bad.
