Meizu opens flagship store in Shenzhen

If you’re going to go to the trouble of procuring an M8 from Meizu, you may as well turn it into an authentic, memorable, world-class experience by making the pilgrimage to Shenzhen, China to pick it up in its hometown. Oh, but don’t just pick it up from some random street vendor — do it up right by swinging on over to Meizu’s shiny new flagship store, where you’ll be able to select your M8 (or at least see renders of the M8) in a comfortable, relaxed environment while rubbing shoulders with Meizu employees. The fresh digs just opened today, and pictures from the grand opening show an epic mass of humanity waiting for the doors to unlock — a promising sign for Meizu, and an unfortunate sign that the enochlophobes among us probably ought to wait a few weeks to make the trek.

Leaked G1 firmware lets you revert to RC29

Did you accidentally flip the switch on that OTA update to RC30 on your G1 and currently find yourself stuck with a non-root lifestyle? Well thanks to forum member chavonbravo over at xda-developers, things are about to get awesome for you. You can now revert back to RC29 with ease by snagging the uploaded image, renaming, copying to your microSD card, and running through standard procedure for re-flashing the phone. We can attest that the hack does indeed work, so feel free to proceed. Word to the wise, though: getting up to a modded RC30 isn’t as easy as some might have you believe, so set aside a little time to walk through the steps (check out ModMyGPhone’s guide page for clear instructions).

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Rock Band 2
If one wanted to know the depths of my love for this series, they’d need only observe two things — my battered, cymbal-expanded, wireless RB2 drum kit, and the two bottle cap-sized blisters currently pulsating beneath the pinkies of my two hands.

This game didn’t get much GOTY chatter this year for being a “glorified expansion pack” — but Harmonix should be recognized for putting together a package that fixes literally every problem with the already-amazing original. They should also be recognized for dropping the best soundtrack of any rhythm game, ever. Costello? Talking Heads? Interpol? Dinosaur Jr.? Harmonix, you spoil me.

Just like you, we get all sorts of gifts around the holidays here at Joystiq HQ. Probably unlike you, we don’t keep any of them (even the good ones!). With that in mind, we’ve got five days of regift giveaways planned, where you get some free stuff (and we get some of our HQ real estate back).

Today, in celebration of our look at the best games of 2008, we’re offering up a copy of Fable 2 (Limited Edition of course, not that that nets you much). Haven’t had a chance to explore Lionhead’s second tour of Albion? Now’s your chance!

Here’s how you win:

  • Leave a comment telling precisely how wrong we are about Fable 2.
  • You must be 18 years or older and a resident of the US or Canada (excluding Quebec)
  • Limit 1 entry per person
  • This entry period ends at 8:30 pm ET on Friday, January 2nd. We’ll randomly select 1 winner at that time to receive Fable 2: Limited Edition (ARV: $70.00). Please check your e-mail!
  • For a list of complete rules, click here

There’s certainly plenty of reasons not to turn a pair of iPods into some portable speakers — difficulty, inevitably poor sound quality, pains of regret — but we’re guessing that the sight of the creation above will prompt at least a few folks to start scavenging for parts. Apparently taking some lessons learned from previous Altoids tin speaker mods, Jordan Horwich crafted these for a total cost of $100, which includes the cost of some front and back iPod panels and some rather extravagant shipping rates. As you might expect, the entire project is a tad tricky, and involves a good bit of soldering, plus some Dremel work to make everything fit just right. Hit up the link below for the complete details and parts list.

God of War: Chains of Olympus
Albeit quite a bit shorter than the console installments, this portable chapter in one of my all-time favorite series was just as lovely, action-packed, and wonderfully presented as its “big brothers.” It’s a shame that a PS2 port hasn’t been made — or at least a downloadable version playable on PS3.

Click above to view the current Volkswagen Polo GTI in our hi-res image gallery

The interwebs were all alight like Times Square last night with reports of a new Polo GTI on the way. According to Auto Express, the mini-GTI will upgrade on the upcoming replacement for the current Polo with all manner of GTI-trademarked upgrades, from sport seats to the black grille with red stripe, with power provided by the same 1.4-liter twin-charged TSI four as the upcoming SEAT Ibiza Cupra and driving 178hp through a six-speed manual or seven-speed DSG to reach sixty in about seven seconds.

Sounds good, though we’re not likely to get the Polo in the American market, in regular or sport versions, for the foreseeable future. What the reports apparently neglect to mention, however, in their enthusiasm for a revived Polo GTI, is that Volkswagen already makes one. The current Polo GTI revived the model in late 2005 with a 1.8-liter turbo four offering up 148hp. Because that didn’t measure up against the competition, VW came out with the Cup Edition that boosted output up to 178hp, the same output which Auto Express pegs for the new version. If the new Polo GTI does indeed bow this year in Frankfurt, we’ll be on hand to bring it to you live, but one thing’s for sure: Wolfsburg will hardly be reinventing the wheel if and when it does.

It’s already been done on the iPhone, and it looks like G1 users can now use their handset of choice to control their computer as well. Given the G1’s preponderance of input options, this new so-called RemoteDroid app is also quite a bit more capable, with it letting you take advantange of the G1’s keypad, and use either the trackball or the touchscreen as a mouse (with a pair of onscreen mouse buttons provided for good measure). Head on past the break for a demo video, and hit up the link below to grab the app for yourself.

Boom Blox
My Wii gathered so many cobwebs this year that it looked like it was a prop from a creepy old Boris Karloff movie. The phenomenon of Wii Fit had me dust it off and breathed some new life into it for a few days, but before long it was relegated back to its hiding space under the couch. That is until Boom Blox slid smoothly into the disc slot. Two days later, I could barely move my right arm due to my newfound obsession, and I still fire it up on a regular basis just to hurl balls at Jenga towers.

This cute little guy is the Tata Indica Vista, a special edition created to celebrate ten years of Indica sales. The Indica has perennially been one of India’s best selling cars, as well as being Tata’s prime mover. Given credit for greatly lifting the fortunes of the company, the Indica walks off with 78% of sales among the cars built on its platform (like the Indigo and Marina).

With design elements that might be generously taken from Ford’s European design language, the Vista’s changes from the regular Indica are all cosmetic. It will get a specially designed number plate, an interior with better materials and design, an integrated audio system and double-stitched seats. It will come in a selection of colors and a variety of wheel options, and if you’re keen on the Vista, you can even read a review. For the rest of you, the full press release is after the jump. Let’s hope Tata can create the same magic with Jaguar and Land Rover after ten years of ownership.
