Macworld Expo is more than just a lot of vendors, eager booth staffers and tacky giveaways. It’s about the people who are Mac fans and come to the Expo every year to see what’s happening with their favorite computer platform.

In this short video, I have a chat with Karen Anderson and Tom Whitmore. Karen’s from the Seattle area and an editor at Take Control Books, and Tom Whitmore is a Bay Area sci-fi bookstore owner and well-known Science Fiction author with incredible Isaac Asimov sideburns. Their take? Macworld should continue into the future, and it would be great to see it in a different city every year.

Check out our other videos, and be sure to keep coming back to TUAW for all of your Macworld Expo 2009 coverage.

We look on in anticipation and give a collective “awww” as 2009′s newest game company pecks its way out of its shell. Going by the name of Azo Studios, the fledgling outfit was founded by a trio of game industry professionals with intentions of creating games and middleware solutions for consoles, PCs and handhelds.

Among those responsible for the company are Dave Eberly, recognized as the driving force behind NetImmerse, technology that eventually went on to become Gamebryo, the engine used in developing such games as Fallout 3 and Warhammer Online.

Eberly is joined by former THQ and Rainbow Studios vets Nick Koziupa and Brian Westergaard, and while Azo Studios has yet to talk specifics, the company notes that it plans to develop original properties as well as work with partners in the music and entertainment industries. We wish you well, little bird, and hope as you leave the nest to spread your wings you take flight, and don’t smash your beak on the ground below.

Click above to start the Top 10 list!

We end 2008 with the hopes that 2009 will be better, and we’d wager the same could be said of nearly every single automotive executive in the world. It was a rough year to be selling anything, and car sales took multiple shots from seemingly every direction – from high gas prices over the summer months to the credit crunch that brought the year to a close. Still, vehicles were sold, numbers were tallied and lists were compiled. Click here to see which vehicles managed to weather the storm better than their peers.

Last month the rumor mill started circulating that Ziff Davis was going to sell off its 1Up.com network of gaming web sites to UGO (owned by the Hearst Corporation), Well, 1Up.com has now made that deal official; the web site has announced that UGO has bought the main site along with GameVideos.com, MyCheats.com and GameTab.com. Specific financial terms were not disclosed. Another 1Up.com site, Filefront.com, is not included in the purchase. According to an internal Ziff Davis email posted at Gamasutra, Filefront will continue on Ziff Davis’ PCMag network of sites.

Also not part of the purchase is Electronic Gaming Monthly magazine, the multi-platform gaming mag that has been in existence since 1989. Again the internal email stated, “With demand for print continuing to decline amongst both advertisers and readers and the content being produced by 1UP no longer available for use in the publication, it simply did not make sense for us to move forward with this business any longer.” The January 2009 dated issue which was sent out in December will be the final issue. There’s no word yet on how subscribers to the magazine will be compensated.

Update: Our sister site Joystiq is reporting that quite a number of 1Up.com’s staff have been laid off as a result of the purchase by UGO. Our thoughts go out to all of the staff affected by this move.

Say what you will about the efficacy of Wii Fit as a fitness tool, but at least one UK hospital has found a perfect use for its balance-centric design: helping amputees adapt to walking on their new prosthetic limbs. Nintendo World Report has a piece on Seacroft Hospital in Leeds, which is using Wii Fit‘s mini-games in addition to traditional physical therapy.

According to Seacroft senior physiotherapist, Lynn Hirst, the key usefulness of the Balance Board and games is enabling patients to tell “where they are taking their weight” in real time. Hirst credits the mini-games with helping “[patients improve] their core stability and their balance.” Hey — that sounds like a great use for a Balance Board.

Click above for a gallery of the six KTM concept vehicles

KTM, the Austrian purveyor of both two- and four-wheeled motoring lust, has made it clear that it’s a force to be reckoned with as it branches out into other enthusiast markets with such ridiculously awesome products as the X-Bow roadster and its RC8 superbike. Two things that remain a constant feature through all of the firm’s recent products are the orange, black and white color pallette and its angular design language. These features, along with KTM’s race-ready heritage, makes conceptual vehicle design for the company extremely interesting and proof comes in the form of six concepts designed by industrial design students at FH JOANNEUM University.

This is an instance where pictures speak louder than words, but we’ve copied the designer’s stated vision for each machine with captions in our gallery below. Each of these concepts was designed in conjunction with KTM, so they may offer an early glimpse into what’s coming from the company. In a word: awesome. We’ll take one of each. Thanks for the tip, Marc!

Within hours of our earlier post regarding 1UP’s reported sale to the Hearst-owned UGO network, the deal was confirmed in individual press releases from both entities. Additionally, Ziff-Davis has made official the closure of EGM after nearly 20 years of publication. It’s January issue — currently on sale — will be its last.

1UP editorial director, Sam Kennedy, is quoted in the release, saying that the site’s staff is “extremely excited to join the UGO team.” UGO’s release states that 1UP.com will operate as a separate entity and implies that its current staff will remain in place. The sale to Hearst also includes GameVideos.com, MyCheats.com and GameTab.com.

The shuttering of EGM – the oldest multi-platform games magazine in the US — leaves GamePro and Game Informer as the last bastions of what, with today’s news, continues to be the dying breed of print media.

[Update: There's not much in the way of new info, but Gamasutra got their mitts on an internal email from Ziff CEO Jason Young, who tells the staff that "more scale is necessary to effectively compete in this market segment." So UGO's planning to keep growing 1UP? Then why kill off the 1UP Show? One other note: Ziff "will continue to operate the Filefront business as a part of the PCMag Digital Network." More as we hear it.]

In great news for blade glue manufacturers everywhere, Good Old Games is following up last week’s release of Broken Sword 2 with Broken Sword 3: The Sleeping Dragon. It’s still solidly in the adventure genre, but BS 3 takes its predecessor’s 2D presentation and adds a whole other “D” to it. You can pick it up for $5.99.

We’re not terribly familiar with the other game being added to the service today, Robinson’s Requiem, but you don’t have to watch much of the video we’ve embedded after the break to know that $5.99 is an absolute steal.
