Microsoft realeases mobile ?Tagging? barcode app

Microsoft has entered the "additional content from a barcode" game, though similar apps like Scanlife have been available for the iPhone for quite some time. Today the beta release of Microsoft Tag - which the company says "links real life with the digital world" - hit the web.

The Silverlight demo and images illustrate possible applications, from watching a movie trailer after snapping the code from a poster to browsing for a band's CD releases by clicking a concert flyer. Long Zheng has posted video of Tag in action on his blog, istartedsomething.

If you'd like to give Tag a try on your handset, visit this page to download it. Content providers (and individuals) that would like to create tags can sign up here to get started.

Imagine the possibilities! Instead of Ikea including half-assed instructions for assembling one of their flat-packed items, maybe you'll soon be able to snap a tag and instantly watch a video of someone else struggling to piece it together.

Gamestop posts record sales numbers for 2008 holiday period

"Recession? What recession?" That's what execs at the game retailer Gamestop are bascially saying today. Indeed their press release that announced its holiday sales numbers for 2008 is actually titled "Gamestop Rises Above Recession". For the time period between Nov. 2, 2008 to Jan. 3, 2009 Gamestop's sales were $2.85 billion, a 22 percent increase from the same period last year. Same store sales were up 10 percent from the same period a year ago.

A PC game exclusive, Blizzard's MMO expansion World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King, was one of the top five best selling games at Gamestop during the period. Activision's WWII shooter Call of Duty World at War was also among the top five.The news has set Gamestop's stock price up over 12 percent as of this news post.

NRK pulls Beatles podcast citing legal concerns

Lost in the din of yesterday's Macworld announcements and video was a story from NRK that they've pulled down the "Our Daily Beatles" podcast -- featuring all 212 songs available for free -- citing contractual obligations with an organization that represents the interests of the recording industry worldwide.

The three players in the debacle are NRK (Norway's publicly-funded broadcasting company), TONO (managers of the rights for Norwegian composers and writers), and IFPI (which represents the rights of international record companies). While NRK and TONO are happy with their contractual agreement to release the podcast, IFPI is not.

NRK's contract with IFPI states that they can only create podcasts for shows aired on the radio in the last four weeks where music accounts for less than 70 percent of the show's length. Since "Our Daily Beatles" was aired in 2007 (and not 2001 as they originally stated, but that's neither here nor there) it falls outside the bounds of the agreement. NRK, rather than air the broadcast again to comply with IFPI's rules, instead decided to pull the podcast offline.

NRK is negotiating with IFPI to update their contract to match the one they have with TONO. Their current agreement expired at the end of last year, but apparently NRK is still bound by its terms.

NRK had originally posted the podcast on Sunday.

Big Game: 700 horsepower, 2323 lb-ft of torque and? a Volvo badge

And so, the new, top-secret Volvo S60R should kick a lot of BMW ass. Okay, we kid. Obviously. Those numbers go with the FH16 700 and yes, as you can see, it's a semi - the world's most powerful, according to Volvo Trucks. It replaces the FH16 660 as the company's range-topping long-haul model, and at the heart of the matter is the D16G engine. In addition to the 700 horsepower variety, this 16-liter six-cylinder diesel also comes in 600 hp and 540 hp flavors. Volvo says it's quieter and more efficient than its predecessor, as well as being clean enough to meet the Euro 5 emissions standards that are scheduled to take effect later this year. Three cab styles are offered, each of which can be rather nicely appointed from the looks of things. So, if you have the need to, say, move EuroDisney from Paris to Geneva, load up a few of these bad boys and you ought to be good to go. EA Sports coming to PlayStation Home with dedicated space, games

Electronic Arts has announced its first foray into PlayStation Home with a dedicated EA Sports label game space, the EA Sports Complex. Set to appear in the Home open beta this spring, the space will contain live leaderboards for all of the EA Sports label's titles, along with games designed specifically for the space (multiplayer poker and an arcade-style Formula 1 racer have been revealed thus far).

EA Sports president Peter Moore said in a press release, "As part of our continued commitment to the connected experience and the digitization of our business, the EA SPORTS Complex is a rich new online environment that presents a compelling and immersive social gaming experience for the global sports audience." Come again, Peter? English.

As you can see in the first released image of the space, there will be ads aplenty. In addition to banners and other signage, the space will feature multiple video walls displaying ads trailers for upcoming EA Sports titles. EA has confirmed that it is working with SCEA on additional Home spaces for its Games and Casual labels. Check out a video walkthrough of the EA Sports Complex after the break.

New Prototype web site launches; new screenshots revealed

The countdown has now ended and Activision has taken off the covers for the newly revamped Prototype web site with new info and screenshots from the upcoming open world action game from developer Radical Entertainment. The game was first announced back in 2006 via Vivendi Games before they were consumed by the Activision Blizzard merger.

The new screenshots seem to show a much dark color palette than previous visuals for the game but perhaps that's appropriate for a game that has you controlling a shape-shifting super powered amnesiac that's running wild in New York City. Originally set for release this past fall Prototype is now due for release sometime in the first half of 2009.

CES 2009: Wireless gadget charging coming to you car

You've probably heard of wireless battery charging technology, but soon you might just see it showing up in your car. Fulton Innovation has teamed up with Leggett & Platt to bring eCoupled Intelligent Wireless Power Technology to your mobile phone, MP3 player, radar detector or just about anything else that needs electricity.

Instead of a web of snarled power cords, the eCoupled system charges any enabled gadget resting on the power pad. As in the illustration, enabled devices resting within range of the pad would be juiced up just as if they were plugged in.

Bret Lewis, director of Fulton Innovation, gave us a demo of the eCoupled system Wednesday night. Fulton had outfitted an iPhone and a Motorola Bluetooth headset with an eCoupled coil. Lewis took the two devices, laid them on a wooden bowl and, as if by magic, the two began to charge. The only indication the bowl was anything but dead tree was an electrical cord running from the back. Underneath, the bowl had been hollowed to accommodate a metal plate with the coil inductor. The same type system could easily be incorporated into a car's console or instrument panel.

Ideally, Lewis says, gadget manufacturers would incorporate the technology into portable devices as they're designed. In the real world, of course, there are potentially billions of legacy devices that could benefit from a third-party attachment to allow the wireless batter charging.

But it gets better! Lewis says the system can also transfer data, potentially allowing wireless coupling of music players and mobile phones with you car.

We also spoke with Ross Haith Jr. of Leggett & Platt who let us in on some commercial vehicle projects they have ready to launch as soon as this year. Read about that as well as press releases from the two companies after the jump.

CES 2009: Sony fires off PSN stats, MTV adds content to video service

We here at Joystiq absolutely revel in statistics and can think of nothing better than smothering ourselves in warm, moist data. Did you know that approximately 54% of all posts written on our site contain frequently unnecessary statistics? And did you know that the only thing we like more than reporting on numbers is to make them up on the spot? Oh well. Here are some real ones, straight from Sony's CES 2009 keynote:
  • 17 million! The number of PlayStation Network accounts ... accounted for. 17 million is a really popular number for online networking, apparently.
  • 330 million! Numbering the pieces of digital content that have been downloaded through PSN.
  • 2 million! That's how many users the Life with PlayStation service has. An updated version will be coming this Spring.
  • 2,000 hours! The answer to the question, "How much video content is MTV Networks adding to Sony's video delivery service?" The deal, which manifests in February, includes shows such as "MTV's The City, Comedy Central's Emmy and Peabody-Award winning South Park, Nickelodeon's SpongeBob SquarePants and VH1's Rock of Love Bus with Bret Michaels."
  • 4! The number of bullet points which encapsulate all that information! This one doesn't count.

Parallels Desktop 4 updated

Popular virtualization software Parallels has been updated to build 3810. The software offers many upgrades and fixes, including Windows DirectX 9.0 with Shaders Model 2 support, as well as "experimental" support for Snow Leopard and Windows 7 beta.

The "experimental" caution, as you might surmise, means not all features will work. For example, in Snow Leopard, there is no USB support, and Parallels notes there is no shared networking support.

Parallels has been running a competitive race against VMware Fusion as each software solution tries to out-feature and outperform the other.

The Parallels update can be downloaded at this link, or you can select "check for updates" from the Parallels application help menu.

A complete list of the enhancements in this build can be found here. Some users are reporting faster performance and some improvements with use of peripherals.
