BioWare to discuss Mass Effect 2 level design at GDC ?09

Filed under:

Though the game has yet to be formally announced (much less as part of a trilogy), BioWare's Mass Effect 2 is set to feature in a 60-minute lecture at 2009's Game Developers Conference, due to be held at the end of March in San Francisco. BioWare project manager, Corey Andruko, and lead technical designer Dusty Everman will treat attendees to a discussion of the EA-owned developer's "new level-creation process, which is focused on maximizing iteration for quality while minimizing rework and cost."

The duo will also discuss the level design lessons learned from the planet-hopping RPG's development -- and how those have led to improvements in the sequel. We imagine at least some of the talk will be focused on the benefits of disabling the "ctrl" and "c" keys on office workstations.

Fallout 3: New ?Operation Anchorage? screens, ?Broken Steel? level cap revealed

Click to embiggen.

Bethesda released new screens today for Fallout 3's Operation Anchorage DLC, along with announcing how high it'll raise the game's level cap with the third DLC pack, Broken Steel, planned for March. The new Operation Anchorage screens (which can be viewed in the gallery below) reveal a ninja suit, a snowy lake landscape and a commie Chinese bunker. The DLC pack is scheduled for release later this month at 800 ($10, 50 caps or 100 pieces of scrap metal).

Bethesda also informed Eurogamer that Broken Steel will raise the player's level cap to 30. We'd previously known that the bump was happening, but had no idea how high. Patient folks may care to wait and see if a discount happens on the packs down the line. As for us, well... that ninja armor looks like it might be worth $10 to put on.

Live from Howard Stringer?s CES keynote

We're back, coming at you live from Sony's second big press event. Today's keynote is anchored by Sir Howard Stringer, a handsome man with enough stature as Chairman and CEO of Sony to lure the world's press out of bed for an 08.30am presentation. Sony already hinted that we'd be hearing more about 3D television prototypes, a new camera, perhaps, and the evolution of Sony's consumer OLED display lineup. This is going to be good.

Yet another special-edition Bugatti Veyron spotted in Dubai

Click above to view high-res images of this special-edition Veyron in Dubai

All Bugatti Veyrons are special, but some are most special than others. After seeing the seemingly endless parade of special editions of this most exclusive of supercar, George Orwell would have revised his work. Now, following the Sang Noir, Pur Sang, Fbg by Hermes, Grand Sport, a rumored Grand Sport Sang Noir, the Pegaso, a mirror-finish example and even the aftermarket Mansory Vincero, come these snapshots of yet another special edition Veyron.

This one-off, apparently spotted in Dubai's Mall of the Emirates (the same location where the Pegaso edition was seen), appears to have been made by Bugatti at its Molsheim headquarters for what is doubtlessly a very wealthy customer in Dubai. The car is painted in French Racing Blue, the most iconic of Bugatti colors, accented by brushed chrome trim all over and the wheels look similar to those employed on the aforementioned Hermes edition. Company founder Ettore Bugatti's signature is repeated on the door panel as well as in the interior and on the door sill plates. No telling if this special EB edition Veyron has had any mechanical changes, but we wonder how much more special a Bugatti can be expected to get. Considering the concentration of Veyrons in the Emirates, apparently an "ordinary" Veyron just ain't special enough.

Xbox Live Primetime coming springtime

With arms raised, Xbox head Robbie Bach declared during Microsoft's CES keynote address, "This Spring we'll launch the Primetime channel on Xbox!" While the announcement didn't exactly elicit an ovation from the crowd, it does put a relative timestamp on the arrival of another, delayed piece of the NXE puzzle (we're still waiting on word about movie sharing). The Primetime channel's complete lineup remains a vague concept of "scheduled social events," but we do have 1 vs. 100 -- and its limitless chest of real prizes -- to look forward to.

The game-show-turned-game-show was briefly demoed during the keynote, ostensibly confirming 102-player support (The One versus the 100-count Mob -- plus one host). Players will be represented by their Avatars and will answer questions "about really, really recent pop-culture," according to Engadget. The demonstration asked: "In 'The Curious Case of Benjamin Button' who plays a character that ages in reverse?" Three potential answers were offered. Clock's ticking!

Sirius XM rolls out interoperable MiRGE satellite radio

Sirius XM has already merged some of its channels and, as expected, it's now taken advantage of CES to roll out its very first interoperable satellite radio: the MiRGE (clever, Sirius XM, clever). In addition to letting you switch between Sirius and XM signals with ease, this radio will display three other channels as you view your current channel, and let you pause and rewind up to 60 minutes of live programming, among other standard features. What's more, XM Sirius has also rolled out a new "Sirius Everything plus XM Everything" package to go along with the radio, which will run you $19.99 a month and seemingly give you everything you'd get by subscribing to the two separate services. Look for the radio to be available early this spring for $250.

Razer offers up Mamba wireless gaming mouse, Carcharias headset

It's been a few months now since we've heard anything from Razer, but the outfit's hitting us up with two new pieces here at CES that are definitely worth a look. Starting things off is yet another gaming mouse, this one coined the Mamba. It features 2.4GHz "gaming grade" wireless technology, an optional, detachable cord, first-in-class polling rates of 1-millisecond, a "world's fastest" 5,600DPI Precision 3.5G Laser sensor and a battery life / DPI stage indicator. Moving on, we've got the Carcharias circumaural audio headset, which rocks a fully adjustable headband, inline remote and a 3-meter braided cable. The devices are set to start shipping in February and January, respectively, at $129.99 / $79.99. The release is hosted up in full after the break.

Macworld 2009: Axiotron Modbook Pro

Simply stated, it's the fastest tablet computer on the planet, and it's a Mac.

Axiotron surprised everyone in 2007 by demoing a tablet Mac, the Modbook, made by transferring the inner workings of a stock Apple MacBook to a new chassis with a touch / pen interface. At Macworld Expo 2008, the Modbook actually shipped. Now Axiotron has raised the bar for all tablet devices by announcing the Modbook Pro, a new model made with the 15.4" MacBook Pro electronics.

I talked with Axiotron's CEO and Chief Engineer Andreas Haas this afternoon. Andreas was with Apple's Newton group and said that he always wanted to get back to a pen-based device. The new device is impressively fast and powerful, and Andreas was willing to show us the insides of the new box. Enjoy the video after the break.

Apple frees iTunes Store music of DRM

It's been a long time coming, but Apple has finally secured the deals to sell the entire iTunes music catalogue without DRM and the entire music library is finally available in the 256kbps AAC format that has been known as iTunes Plus until now.

Starting in April, iTunes will also be introducing variable pricing for songs - 69¢, 99¢ and $1.29 depending on the prices set by the record labels. Despite the momentum that the likes of Amazon and other DRM-free vendors such as 7Digital have been gaining in the last few months, the iTunes store remains the largest (and most popular) online music store.

If you're already sunk a fair amount of money in the iTunes store, Apple will allow you to upgrade your entire library to the DRM-free format - for 30¢ per song or 25% of the album price.

Site sponsored by the generous donations from our Sterling Silver Jewelry sister site. Please support them for supporting us! As it turns out I've spent a lot of time and energy in my jewelry business. That means that things around here have been lacking tremendously and I'm sorry for that! Things like Sterling Silver Jewelry have always been a little more important to me than little ventures like this. Maybe it's because I spent so much time handcrafting all of my own jewelry from scratch. That is I take all my jewelry and hand make the rings, and assemble them into bracelets, necklaces, and earrings to become complete Handmade sterling silver jewelry pieces that you see on my Archmaille Designs website. If I had more jewelry sales then things would be easier online for me to focus on this here site, but handmade jewelry sales are slim so I've still got a LOT of jewelry work to do before things are good to go, so to speak. Thanks for understanding that my handmade silver jewelry business is rather important and I will do what I can when I can for this one, but until then sterling silver jewelry remains the focus for me.
