Unified UI previews the future of Samsung hardware
If Samsung devices are your preferred flavor, get very familiar with the interface pictured above. Eased in amongst product announcements during today's CES keynote is the news that all their devices -- camcorders, HDTVs, digital cameras, PMPs and all --will be sharing this style going forward. Seeming to follow the example set by Sony's XMB, and hopefully adding momentum to a trend others will continue, the idea is that users pick it up on one device, and can carry that experience to future purchases without a sharp learning curve. As much as we enjoy figuring out where the contrast setting is for the 20th time, early adopters have more than enough options to memorize. Of course, unified doesn't mean static, and this interface should be plenty customizable. Word is that consumers' first look at the new UI is via Samsung's new digital camera lineup, but other details are few and far between. VixML debuts iPhone development middleware, demos ?TrueFlirt?
Filed under: Macworld, Software, App Store Viximo has debuted TrueFlirt, a $5.99 iPhone application that demonstrates the capabilities of VixML, a simple development environment for creative entrepreneurs.
TrueFlirt, as you might suspect, allows you to send animated "flirts" to other users of TrueFlirt. You can "FlirtBack" with one of a few pre-populated "playful" replies.
TrueFlirt is -- while perhaps not suitable for the iTunes "productivity" category -- an interesting technology demonstration of VixML, an XML-based content creation platform that enables interactive designers to create native iPhone content for Viximo applications.
The way it works is a content creator signs up with Viximo, who provides them their framework and tools for development. Developing VixML uses structured XML that -- at first glance -- seems easy to understand, and includes code support for animation, interaction and music. Viximo says it's a much lesser investment in terms of time and money, since you don't need to become an Apple developer, nor pay to submit the app to the App Store.
Once an application is developed, Viximo will check it for problems, and submit it for publication in the App Store. It's unclear how pricing is structured, or how much of a cut Viximo gets for each application.
VixML applications are analogous to standalone Flash animations, but obviously they don't use Flash. Instead, they use the OpenGL 2D and 3D graphics engines built into iPhone OS. Applications can send and receive data (like TrueFlirt), as well as interact with the iPhone and iPod touch's built-in accelerometer.
Viximo, in addition to TrueFlirt, is releasing more titles expected to arrive in the App Store during the first quarter of 2009. TrueFlirt is available in the App Store now (for $5.99), and a free version is coming soon. The free version will be able to receive flirts, but the paid version can both send and receive them. More Spore: ?Galactic Adventures? expansion coming this spring
Filed under: Mac, PC
The first expansion pack for Will Wright's "everything sim," Spore, is slated for release this spring, according to -- of all things -- an invitation to its debut event. Called Spore Galactic Adventures, the pack is evidently just one part of an entire line-up of Spore tie-ins/spin-offs EA and Maxis are planning for 2009. Judging by its title, the pack will expand on Spore's galactic end-game, widely considered to be the sim's most engaging stage. As for what those other Spore titles could be, we'll take your suggestions (sorry, we've already called Spore: ODST!) in comments.

Qualcomm tries to distract from Snapdragon fail with Android
At this point we're pretty close to calling Qualcomm's Snapdragon platform vaporware -- sure, we've seen a lot of clunky prototypes, but the company's been promising a commercial launch forever, going so far as to say that it had lined up 30 reference designs by the likes of HTC, LG, Samsung, and ASUS. Sure, ok -- but all it's got at CES are the same old gigantor testing devices and lonely Linux convertible. Oh, but now there's Android. Very impressive, guys -- too bad Android was also running on the actually-interesting GiiNii Movit Mini parked next door. At least the whole thing wasn't faked liked last year, we suppose. Shots in the gallery, of course. Filed under: Cellphones, Handhelds Qualcomm tries to distract from Snapdragon fail with Android originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 08 Jan 2009 07:38:00 EST. Samsung shows off MBP200 pico projector
Tiny projectors seem to be popping up everywhere, filling press releases with amazing promise. However, it's still not too often that you actually get to see the things in action, so we were glad to see Samsung displaying not one but two prototypes of their upcoming MBP200 pico projector running for all to see. The Digital Experience room was rather well lit, not ideal conditions for a wee projector, but it threw a respectably bright image on a screen about three feet away, shown above. Not much bigger than a cell phone, the MBP200 sports an integrated 480 x 320 projector plus a 2.2-inch, 320 x 240 LCD for when you feel like being a little more private. It plays videos, music, and even office productivity files directly from a microSD slot, meaning, in theory, you can do your entire presentation with one device. It all sounds and looks fantastic, the only thing missing being some semblance of an anticipated price or release date more specific than "this year."Continue reading Samsung shows off MBP200 pico projector Filed under: Cellphones, CES, Displays, Portable Video Samsung shows off MBP200 pico projector originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 08 Jan 2009 07:01:00 EST. TUAW First Look: Keynote ?09
Filed under: Macworld, iLife, Features Call me biased or unfortunate, but I detest slide presentations. Ugh, even typing that gave me the heeby-jeebies. I've sat through entirely too many demos during which some absolute bore read to me as if we were in preschool circle time. Not to mention the blue, marbleized buttons and millions of bullet points. Oh, the bullet points.
When Keynote was introduced in January of 2003, my initial feelings were mixed. On one hand, Apple is a stylish company that makes thoughful, easy to use software. On the other hand, this was presentation software. How good could it be? The answer is "pretty darn good," and even better now with the latest version of Keynote.
When you first launch one of the iWork applications, you're greeted with an invitation to try or buy the software. It's much more attractive in '09 than the '08 version of the same splash screen, and that's indicative of nearly every aspect of Keynote '09: It's very beautiful.

RCA dishes new 16GB SL5016 Lyra Slider MP3 player, we yawn
Really, RCA? You come all the way to Vegas to unload a slightly more capacious version of your already unexciting Lyra Slider MP3 player? As of today, consumers waiting on pins and needles for this here DAP to arrive with 16GB of memory built-in can thank their lucky stars, as the SL5016 offers just that. 'Course, we have no idea why you'd pay $119.99 for it, but maybe the bundled easyRip software is some amazing value-add that we just can't comprehend.Continue reading RCA dishes new 16GB SL5016 Lyra Slider MP3 player, we yawn Filed under: CES, Portable Audio, Portable Video RCA dishes new 16GB SL5016 Lyra Slider MP3 player, we yawn originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 08 Jan 2009 06:32:00 EST. PSA: Rock Band 2 SD card not required for Wii DLC
Filed under: Nintendo Wii
We're sure that most of our readers will already know this, but this is for our more casual audience. Rock Band DLC for the Wii is quite exciting, but let's be clear that nobody needs to buy the recently announced $13 Rock Band 2 SD card for it to work. The Wii should support any brand of SD card up to 2GB (beyond 2GB we get into murky tech territory).
A quick search on Amazon finds that most 2GB SD cards can be purchased for under $10. For those who just can't live without the branding on this SD card (which you'll never see once it's inside the console), it'll be available this spring. Also, this PSA extends to those outrageously priced Wii-branded SD cards as well.PSA: Rock Band 2 SD card not required for Wii DLC originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 08 Jan 2009 06:00:00 EST. Psst, wanna see some vaporware? Or at least ideas for vehicles that have a long way to go before they move from rendering to the real world? Well, then we've got the posts for you. Try on the RORMaxx Formula AE or the Lampo electric roadster for size. Sadly, the Aptera also joins the ranks of the delayed, but there might be good news in a surprise announcement from Ford in Detroit. Two words: Focus EV.

Panasonic launches new line of of camcorders at CES 2009
We already caught wind of a few new camcorders from Panasonic today, but now the whole crew is official. We've got too many to call 'em out, but here's a few highlights. First off, the SDR-S26 packs a mighty ridiculous 70x optical zoom. The partnering SDR-H80 and SDR-H90 also include optical image stabilization and varying amounts of internal storage, but truthfully, these really aren't worth swooning over. The half dozen Full HD models, however, are definitely worth peeking. The HDC-HS300, HDC-TM300 and HDC-HS250 all feature the outfit's 3MOS system, but unfortunately, none of these are particularly affordable. If you don't believe us, have a look at the links below.
