Sharp gets with the Profile 2.0 program with the BD-HP16U & BD-HP22U
Many thought that Profile 1.1 players should've died last year, but that just wasn't the case. But those internet content lovin' fools can finally get behind Sharp's Blu-ray players. At this point Sharp realizes that with all the Blu-ray players available, you gotta do something special to get noticed, so Sharp is striving to make its players work better with its line of TVs by automatically putting the display into the optimal viewing setting -- like dot by dot. The only thing that distinguishes these two players from each other is that the BD-HP22U will be out in May, includes 2GB of USB memory, and retails at $299, while the BD-HP16U is due in March for $229.Filed under: CES, HDTV, Home Entertainment Sharp gets with the Profile 2.0 program with the BD-HP16U & BD-HP22U originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 07 Jan 2009 17:00:00 EST. For Eur-eyes Only: Volvo releases new five-cylinder diesel in S80
Filed under: Euro, Green, Volvo, UK
Click above to view the Volvo D5 engine in all its high-resolution wonder
By now, Volvo has been almost completely integrated into the Ford empire, but with its parent company looking to offload the Swedish subsidiary, Volvo's going to have to demonstrate its worth as a standalone automaker. Developing its own engines is a good place to start, and Volvo has just unveiled its own unique diesel powerplant.
Replacing the existing D5 diesel, the new variant continues the five-cylinder tradition, but that's where the similarities end. The new mill displaces 2.4 liters, supplemented by twin sequential turbochargers, ceramic glow-plugs and piezoelectric fuel injectors. The new tech helps the D5 generate 205 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of twist, but more importantly, the engine now meets the stringent Euro 5 emissions standard with only 164g of CO2 per kilometer, while returning an impressive 45.6 mpg. The engine will be available in the British market S80 sedan in a few months, but unfortunately it isn't earmarked to cross the Atlantic. All we can do is look at the photos in the gallery and read the details in the press release after the jump.

In small doses: Tetris is a PTSD ?vaccine,? prevents flashbacks, study finds
Filed under: Culture, Puzzle
Believe it or not, the image above is not some ten-year-old's 5th grade collage. It's real science, by the fine chaps in the department of psychiatry at the University of Oxford. The study sat individuals in front of a 12-minute clip of "traumatic scenes of injury and death" (we're not talking Mario falling into a pit here), gave them a 30-minute break, and then split them into two groups. One group was asked to sit in silence. The other played Tetris for ten minutes.
The study found that those who played Tetris had significantly fewer flashbacks of the gruesome video in the days that followed, according to mandatory diaries kept by the participants. The results suggest that Tetris acts as a "cognitive vaccine" against the effects of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), which correlates with contemporary treatments that call for the use of visual "distractions" to treat reoccurring mental trauma. But much like Heroin before it, Tetris may end up being the cure that needs to be cured. In other words: Use only as directed.

Zangief Chronicles reveals real-world struggles of Street Fighter
Filed under: Culture, Fighting, Video "Zangief battled many enemies in his life before Street Fighter II. All have fallen beneath lumbering boots of Zangief at one time or another. But sometimes, there is battle that even Zangief cannot win. One that doesn't take place in frozen tundras against polar bears. Zangief speak of greater struggle. A struggle that lives not in physical world, but in human heart. This is Zangief Chronicles."
We don't know why Zangief Chronicles exists, but we're glad it does. Sent to Capcom as a New Year's gift, this video series reveals some juicy details on the life (and loves!) of everyone's favorite shirtless Russian Street Fighter. You can catch all the episodes here.

Renault to unveil new Megane RS in Geneva
Filed under: Geneva Motor Show, Euro, Hatchbacks, Renault
Click above for a hi-res gallery of the Renault Megane Trophy concept
Hot hatch enthusiasts know what it means when Renault unveils a new compact car: a new Renaultsport variant will follow. The French automaker's performance division continues to roll out some the hottest compacts in the business, so when the wraps came off the third-generation Megane in Paris this past fall, it was only a matter of time before the tuned-up sport version would follow, and reports now indicate that it'll arrive this March at the Geneva Motor Show.
For this latest generation of Megane, Renault continues to differentiate the sporty three-door from the more utilitarian five-door model, but the RS version promises to raise the bar yet again. Taking cues from the Megane Trophy racer (pictured above) also unveiled at the Paris show, the new Megane RS is tipped to feature a wider track, flared wheel arches, a wing bisecting the front air dam, and a center-exit exhaust. Power is expected to come from the company's 2.0-liter turbo, but tuned to produce 250 horsepower. The requisite chassis tuning, optional limited slip differential and beefy Brembo brakes promise to round out the package.

Rumor: ?Hardcore Gamer? magazine being sold to ? highest eBay bidder
Filed under: Culture
Well, at least 1UP didn't have to endure this sort of treatment. The owner of enthusiast magazine "Hardcore Gamer" has seemingly decided to bid his hobby-turned-business adieu and ... sell it to the highest bidder on eBay. "We're very well established within the video game industry and are currently enjoying all the respect and recognition that a print magazine gets, that the thousands of gaming web sites may never get," reads the seller's description. "If you want instant establishment in the game industry, you won't find another opportunity as quick and easy to get into as this."
Interested? Well, the magazine -- distributed nationally by DoubleJump Books -- and all its associated copyrights, back issues, internet domains etc. can be yours for the starting bid of $42,000. We've contacted the magazine to confirm the listing and possibly suss out a "buy it now" price. After all, what better time to invest in a gaming magazine than ...
Oh.

Suzuki?s Hungarian production halts due to Russia/Ukraine gas dispute
Filed under: Euro, Plants/Manufacturing Russia and Ukraine are presently in the midst of a natural gas pricing dispute. Russia wants Ukraine to pay closer to market price for the commodity. Ukraine says that Russia should pay more for the use of its pipelines, through which the bulk of the EU's Russia-sourced natural gas flows. Russia has escalated matters by cutting off its gas shipments via Ukrainian pipelines completely, and the EU is scrambling as it deals with shortages. Obviously, there's zero love lost between Russia and Ukraine, and political finger-pointing continues apace. Pricing negotiations resume tomorrow, and EU monitors are likely to get involved.
In the meantime, the effect is already being felt in the European industrial sector. Hungarian government restrictions on industrial gas usage have forced Magyar Suzuki to cease production entirely. The automaker's Esztergom plant, located around 30 miles outside Budapest, produces the Suzuki Swift; the Suxuki SX4 and Fiat Sedici; and the Suzuki Splash / Opel Agila twins. Suzuki hopes to get Esztergom back online this coming Monday.

Monitor websites in Firefox with Pingdom?s Mr. Uptime
Filed under: Internet, Utilities, Mozilla, Freeware, Browsers
There are plenty of ways to be notified when a site comes back online, like previously mentioned Ding, It's Up and Notify Me. If you're a Firefox user, you may as well use an extension that's powered by the granddaddy of monitoring services, Pingdom's Mr. Uptime. When you encounter a supported error on a page whlie browsing, the Mr. Uptime toolbar is displayed to allow you to monitor the current page. Sites are monitored in the background while you continue surfing. Checks can be based on HTTP status messages or keywords on the page, and you can specify the length of time you want a site monitored. When a site comes back online, Mr. Uptime can either notify you or simply open the page in a new tab automatically. You can find the addon in Mozilla's directory, or on the Pingdom website. It's now fully Firefox 3 compatible. [ via LifeHacker ]

Macworld 2009: TechSmith?s Jing goes Pro
Filed under: Macworld, Software Although Camtasia Studio, the pro-level screencast offering from TechSmith, is still a Windows-only affair (hopefully not for too much longer), the company is present on the Macworld Expo show floor with a booth highlighting the screencast.com website and Jing, one of our favorite screen capture tools. Jing's free offering continues to provide easy and quick screen snaps with tight web integration and handy SWF video capture, but the new announcement here is the introduction of Jing Pro, a new paid plan with additional features for heavy screencasting use.
Jing Pro, for $14.95/year, offers users H.264/MPEG-4 compression in addition to the FLV files produced by the free version; these videos are ideal for upload to YouTube or other online services (in fact, the Pro version includes a Send to YouTube button). The Pro build is capable of capturing full-motion video off your screen, putting it in the same league with tools like Vara/Telestream's $99 Screenflow. You can also skip the Jing ad banner placed on snaps created with the free version. Encoding MPEG-4 does require a bit more horsepower, so the minimum CPU for Pro is a 2Ghz Core 2 Duo Intel processor.
We talked with TechSmith's reps at the booth and a video of the conversation is in the 2nd half of this post. eeeMac creator tells you how to do it yourself
Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, Hardware, Hacks, How-tos, Cult of Mac, Mods, MacBook Air
A little while ago, we posted about Gregory Cohen's eeeMac -- he modded an eeePC into an OS X-running ultraportable, including adding a little Apple icon on the back. And now, he's posted how he did it all on a blog, so that if you've got a few Saturday afternoons, an eeePC to destroy, and a big interest in making a really tiny (fake) Mac, you can do it too. And even if you don't want to crack the case and do a little modding, you can still try to just get OS X running on the little machine -- Gregory has done all the hard work for you and boiled everything you need down into a 22mb disk image (you'll also need a retail OS X disc, of course).
Very cool. I'd never have the time or insight to put one of these together, but I can definitely marvel at the achievement.TUAWeeeMac creator tells you how to do it yourself originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Wed, 07 Jan 2009 15:45:00 EST.
