Indie Showcase: Best Indie Games of 2008
Welcome to the Indie Showcase, a semi-regular column on Big Download that takes a look at games we haven't covered on the site that we really think you should play.
Wow. 2008 sure was a whirlwind year for independent games on PC and console alike. Games like World of Goo, Braid, and Everyday Shooter have defied our expectations and brought forth a sort of indie gaming renaissance. So let's take a look back at all those indie games released or significantly updated in 2008. There's a lot that can be learned from the independent and the auteur, after all. These games will be in no particular order, because I don't want to taint this list with trying to name a best, second best, and so on. They are all great games.

BioShock franchise has ?potential? for five sequels
Filed under: News
Talking with MCV, 2K Games global prez Christoph Hartmann admits that the BioShock franchise could churn out five total sequels in its life, but promises that 2K won't just "cash in" on the title.
Talking about the potential for future sequels, Hartmann says that "if we spin it the right way and get the right twist of innovation, we can make six parts of it, as Star Wars did." Something that Star Wars did do, but video games are a bit different and as much as Hartmann wants to compare BioShock to Star Wars, it's clear to us that BioShock is its own beast. Just be careful 2K. Just be careful.

Next Jaguar sedan looks like stretch XK, with four-door ?coupe? overtones
Filed under: Sedans/Saloons, Sports/GTs, Jaguar, Rumormill
Is Jaguar planning a Panamera and Rapide challenger? Until now we've had speculation and spy pics, but Channel 4 is reporting that Jaguar officials have confirmed plans to "introduce a new saloon" later this year, that "takes the luxury saloon to new heights in terms of its technical enhancements." Although this new sedan will eventually replace the XJ in the company's lineup, it is said to be radically different from the traditional sedan. Imagine XF detailing on a four-door XK and you won't be far off from the vehicle that's due to show up later this year.
No official details have been reported, but Jaguar officials are apparently mentioning the Porsche Panamera, Maserati Quattroporte, Aston Martin Rapide and Mercedes-Benz CLS as competition. Engine options will likely include Jaguar's new 3.0L V6 diesel as well as the new direct-injection, 5.0L gas V8s in naturally aspirated or supercharged form. The car should be revealed later this year, making 2009 a very busy year for the company. Jaguar is already set to unveil the supercharged XF-R, as well as updated XJ, XK and XKR models, along with its new V8 and V6 diesel engines at the Detroit Auto Show next week. We can hardly wait.

LG goes official with its NetCast effort
As we heard at the LG presser, the company is getting in on the Netflix, CinemaNow and YouTube streaming game with its NetCast feature built into select LH50-class LCDs and PS80 plasmas, so you can pick your pixel flavor. It's definitely getting crowded in the space, but the Yahoo! Widget Engine angle is what sets this offering apart. Combined with PC connectivity, we're anxious to see support for MKV and more coming down the pike. Fun times ahead, and we won't argue with the arms race-like competition between vendors to shoehorn more functionality into the living room. Hit the link if you're curious enough to peruse the official PDF.Filed under: HDTV, Home Entertainment, Networking LG goes official with its NetCast effort originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 07 Jan 2009 14:52:00 EST. Toshiba announces TDP-F10U pico projector
We just heard about Texas Instruments' new DLP Pico tech being stuffed into an array of new teeny projectors being debuted at CES. One of that bunch is Toshiba's just announced TDP-F10U. This little bundle of joy is similarly sized, shaped, and spec'd to a lot of other mid-sized picos, boasting an SVGA, 800 x 600 resolution with an 800:1 contrast ratio, weighing in around 1.4 pounds. It's expected for sometime in March 2009 and will run you roughly $599 if you want to get one of your own -- and we fully expect that you do!

The rest of Toshiba?s CES 2009 extravaganza
We can't definitively say that Toshiba is done after this (never underestimate the depth of CES, friends), but we're bundling up the rest of the middling minutiae from its blowout at CES. If the fresh REGZA HDTV line is just too big, awesome and expensive for your tastes, the company is busting out a smattering of LCD TV combo sets ranging from $299.99 to $549.99. Furthermore, it's introducing a trio of portable DVD players, three DVD players and four DVD recorders. Unlike most of the gear showcased today, Tosh actually bothered to provide prices and ship dates for these, so head on past the break to get those tidbits.

Kangaroo, bear, crazy hair: Must be a Tekken 6 trailer
Filed under: News, Tekken 6 There's only one King of Iron Fist Tournament. Okay, so there have actually been five of them, but who's counting, right? There's even a sixth on the way, and we've got a trailer to prove it. The new trailer showcases some CG cutscenes, complete with strange and mysterious plot elements no one really cares about. No, what matters is all those glorious (and occasionally goofy) fighters. Luckily, they're in there too, putting the smack down. They flash by pretty quickly though. See if you can spot them all!
Tekken 6, incidentally, arrives this fall. Kangaroo, bear, crazy hair: Must be a Tekken 6 trailer originally appeared on Xbox 360 Fanboy on Wed, 07 Jan 2009 14:30:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

iPhone service challenges show how Apple can go the extra mile
Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, Retail, iPhone For years, my Apple stuff has been super reliable, more than any other brand I own. So it came as a bit of a surprise when my trusty iPhone reported 'call failed' as I tapped a number from my address book. I assumed it was an AT&T cell problem, so moved out of the area and tried again. Same result. I looked at the iPhone screen and saw I had a full signal and 3G, so I tried yet again. This time I noticed that the call started, the signal dropped to zero (even the AT&T logo vanished) and the call failed again.
Assuming cell tower gremlins, I didn't think too much about it, but as a precaution returned home and restored and re-synced my phone.
Next day I made another call or two with no problems, then patted myself on the back for dealing with the problem on my own. Then the same symptoms returned. Not only were outgoing calls failing, but incoming calls failed in the same way.
A trip to the Apple Store was in order, so I made an appointment and sauntered on in. The tech was helpful. Tried the usual tricks like restarting the phone, resetting network settings etc, but nothing solved it. We switched SIMs with another phone, but no joy there. He suggested I call AT&T and have them 're-provision' the phone. Did that but no dice.

Could there be five sequels to BioShock? 2K Games says, ?Maybe?
Take Two Interactive's 2K Games brand hit a home run in 2007 with the release of BioShock. The art-heavy shooter from its 2K Boston/Australia studio is already spawning a sequel which 2K Marin is developing for release this fall. But MCV reports that 2K Games could have even bigger plans for their franchise beyond just BioShock 2.
2K Games' global president Christoph Hartmann is quoted as saying, ""For BioShock, because it's so story driven, the question obviously arises: how long can you do it without turning into The Matrix?", He adds, "But, then again, look at Star Wars. It's a fight between good and evil, just like BioShock. If we spin it the right way and get the right twist of innovation, we can make six parts of it, as Star Wars did." Even with these kinds of ideas, Hartmann claims he doesn't want to "cash in" by simply releasing a ton of BioShock sequels.Could there be five sequels to BioShock? 2K Games says, "Maybe" originally appeared on Big Download Blog on Wed, 07 Jan 2009 14:00:00 EST. Open Source Free Download Manager v3 adds tons of new features
Filed under: Internet, Utilities, Windows, Freeware, Open Source, P2P, Windows x64
Free Download Manager has released version 3 of their application, and the new version sports several new features that make it an excellent option handling all your download duties. The new release can now manage torrents as well as download and convert Flash video from sites like YouTube. A remote control feature has also been added, enabling web management of your downloads (like uTorrent's WebUI). FDM also allows you to preview certain files and can download partial contents of zip files. At about 18mb installed, it's not as lightweight as rolling uTorrent, DownThemAll, and any one of the YouTube downloaders out there, but it's an excellent all-in-one option for people that like to keep things simple. A full list of features is available on the FDM web site. It's released under the GPL and you can choose between the full version or the lite, which lacks the torrent, video conversion, upload, and language plugins (though you can install them later if you choose). There's no portable download on FDM's site, but Portable Freeware Collection has one available.
