Vista to Windows 7 upgrade date and details revealed
For everyone wanting a free upgrade to Windows 7, Microsoft finally has an answer. Unfortunately, it probably isn't the answer you wanted to hear.
Starting on July 1, 2009 any new systems purchased will be eligible for the no-charge update. In addition to purchasing the PC after that date, there are three more rules:
- End users must purchase a new PC that is pre-installed with an eligible Windows Vista OS. Retail boxed Vista versions likely won't qualify.
- Your computer must have a valid Windows Vista COA attached.
- The only Windows Vista(R) versions eligible for the program are Home Premium, Business, and Ultimate. Vista basic users are out of luck.
Oh yeah, there's one more little detail that may be important: Participation in the program is optional, so it's ultimately up to the OEM that builds your system to allow the upgrade. In all fairness, this has been the case with every other Windows upgrade -- and almost all vendors participate.
With news like this, I'd fully expect to see the Windows 7 beta torrent become even more popular. Steve Saleen?s plan of attack for 2009
Filed under: Tuners, Sports/GTs, Chevrolet, Dodge, Ford, Special/Limited Editions
Click above for a gallery of the SMS Dodge Challenger
Steve Saleen is bringing back the musclecar wars with the help of the Detroit 3. Not content to modify Ford Mustangs alone, the former head of Saleen, Inc. is branching out into bowtie and Mopar territory as well. His new company, SMS Limited, will take on all three of the new retro rods this year. Under his former eponymous company's banner he had focused primarily on Ford vehicles, but now that Dodge and Chevrolet are getting back into the musclecar game, he figures it's time to expand his reach.
We've already profiled the SMS Limited Signature Series Dodge Challenger that Saleen has developed, and talked to Steve about what he had planned for the 2010 Mustang, but now we have a few more details about the SMS versions of the Ford Mustang and Chevy Camaro. For 2009, SMS Limited will not only build the SMS 570 and 570X Challengers, but also the SMS 460 Mustang and later in the year a line of SMS Camaros in their 150,000-square-foot facility in Anaheim, California.
All of the cars will get SMS superchargers, tweaked suspensions, and unique exterior styling elements, and the superchargers are more efficient and provide better cooling than anything they've used before. The company is also putting a new emphasis on upscale interiors, with better materials that should justify the cars' higher sticker prices. SMS Challenger production should begin this month, with 2010 Mustangs starting to show up in the spring. And if all goes according to plan, Camaros should start rolling out by the end of the year. Customers wanting a bit of Saleen magic applied to their musclecars will be able to order them through select Dodge, Ford or Chevrolet dealerships.

Gears of War 2 Flashback maps hit XBLM for $5
Filed under: News, Xbox Live Marketplace, Gears of War 2
Hey, remember the Flashback Map Pack for Gears of War 2? You know, the one that you can only get by purchasing a brand new copy of the game at your favorite retailer? Guess what? It's now available on Xbox Live Marketplace for 400 Microsoft Points, also known as $5. That's five maps for a buck a piece, which isn't too shabby. Strangely, the text description of the content still says that it's only available as a free download with new copies of the game, but it's definitely listed for 400 points. If you've been worried about losing the Flashback maps by picking up a used copy of Gears 2, it looks like you can officially rest easy. Play your cards right and you could even save some money.
Find a video preview of the Flashback Map Pack after the break.

Twitter hacking fiasco underscores importance of strong passwords
Filed under: Internet, Security, Web services, web 2.0 It should go without saying at this point, but here it is in plain English one more time: don't use dictionary words for your password. If you're a member of the technical staff of a prominent web 2.0 entity like Twitter, you really ought to know better.
Furthermore, if you're part of the security team for a site like Twitter, you should have some kind of basic measures in place to prevent brute force hacking attempts. It's just common sense.
GMZ, the hacker who compromised several celebrity accounts randomly targeted "Crystal," a Twitter user he just thought to be fairly popular, and he hit the jackpot. She turned out to have access to Twitter's technical tools, and had chosen a password so horribly simple it could have been mentioned in the list from Hackers: happiness.
If you weren't already in doubt about the safety of your various web accounts, this incident should serve as a wake-up call. Since it's not always a priority for a web service to provide protection, do yourself a favor and use a nice, complex password.
And please, for the love of humanity, try not to use dictionary words.

Ford Mustang Cobra Jet rumbles off the assembly line
Filed under: Motorsports, Sports/GTs, Ford
Click above to view the first Cobra Jet coming off the assembly line
The name "Cobra Jet" may remind some of an unfortunate Sam Jackson film, but to Mustang and drag racing enthusiasts it refers to the latest addition to the pony-car family, the Mustang FR500CJ. The drag-racing version of the outgoing Mustang was unveiled at SEMA just a few months ago and is already rolling off the assembly line as the latest model in the Ford Racing line-up.
Featuring a modified 5.4-liter V8 with cold air induction, the Cobra Jet features stainless competition headers, upgraded rear axle and driveshaft, drag-optimized adjustable suspension, and unique wheels wrapped in slicks. Buyers can choose between a six-speed manual or three-speed automatic, and the interior is augmented by racing buckets and short-throw shifter (on the manual version). The vehicles, which receive unique VINs since they aren't street legal, are delivered in body-on-white, with louvered rear window panels. The package presents an affordable and straightforward racing platform for those seeking domination of the quarter-mile. Check it out in the galleries below.

Silent Hill: Homecoming classified by Australia?s OFLC
Filed under: News
After being refused classification by the OFLC -- Australia's ratings board -- Silent Hill: Homecoming is finally coming home Down Under with an MA15+ rating. The game had earlier failed to net an MA15+ rating in September of 2008, effectively banning it from sale. It wasn't alone, as several other titles, including F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin and Fallout 3, ran into the same situation (both of which were later classified). According to Gamespot, Silent Hill: Homecoming was apparently resubmitted to the OFLC and has now been classified MA15+, though it's unclear what changes were made to the game, if any.
Hopefully, the pervading creepiness is still intact, because that's all that matters.

Cadillac One: Details on president-elect Obama?s new limo
Filed under: Etc., Cadillac, Special/Limited Editions One of the perks of being the Commander-in-Chief is getting to ride in the back of a presidential limousine. And while certain presidents have had hand-me-down chariots, President-Elect Barack Obama is set to get a brand-new, high-tech model.
Looking much like a standard Cadillac DTS stretched to the limits, Obama's new ride is an altogether different beast, with the highest levels of protection, technology and luxury a presidential limo has ever seen. Described as "a rolling tank with windows," word is that the limo is actually not a Cadillac, but rather something built on a medium-duty truck chassis.
Spy shooters have captured the limo testing alongside a pair of GMC Topkick pickups, and keen observers have noted that the wheels and rubber appear to be dimensionally identical to those found on the big trucks (the limo sports 19.5-inch Goodyear Regional RHS tires). Bystanders even contend that a the limo sounds like its sporting a diesel engine underhood.
The exterior is an amalgamation of various Cadillac bits, with Escalade headlights flanked by Caddy's corporate grille and a set of taillights pulled from the STS. It's doubtful that all this kit -- and the massive fender flares -- will find their way onto the model bound for the White House car port, but the ultra-thick doors should provide a presidential-sized barrier between POTUS and the outside world. The only question left is whether Obama's code name (Renegade) will carry over when he moves into Pennsylvania Ave. on the 20th, or if it the Secret Service will change it to Caddyman.
Hit the jump to view a video of Obama's new ride in action.Continue reading Cadillac One: Details on president-elect Obama's new limo Cadillac One: Details on president-elect Obama's new limo originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 07 Jan 2009 11:33:00 EST. Honda unveils 2009 Tokyo Auto Salon lineup
Filed under: Concept Cars, Japan, Honda, Tokyo Auto Salon
Click above for a hi-res gallery of the Sports Modulo S2000 Concept and friends
Detroit's not the only auto show kicking off on January 11. The annual Tokyo Auto Salon (think "Japanese SEMA") also kicks off this Sunday, and Honda has announced the vehicle lineup it'll display at Makuhari Messe. The two headliners are the Sports Modulo S2000 and Fit concepts. The former is a somewhat ghastly take on Honda's two-seat sports car, with a face that belongs in an aquarium and side cladding straight from a '90s Pontiac stylist's wildest fantasies. Inside, the Sports Modulo S2000 Concept is actually very nice, with swanky brown leather adorning a variety of surfaces. It still doesn't atone for that clock-stoppingly ugly body kit, though. Read on for some brief commentary on a pair of other concepts headed to the show, and check out the gallery below for the complete model rundown.

BusyCal brings together calendars and syncing
Filed under: Macintosh, Web services, Commercial, Beta I'm quite the fan of BusyMac Software's very excellent BusySync application for Mac OS X. It's always been a great (and ridiculously easily ) way to share calendars over your local network using the Mac's built-in zero-config Bonjour technology.
Today at Macworld Expo, the company has announced that an all-new application, BusyCal, is coming later in the year. The application, which is marketed as iCal Pro, promises 'the beauty and simplicity of iCal with the power of BusySync's ... calendar sharing and syncing technology'.
On top of all the regular calendaring that you'd expect, the application will ship with:
- Bonjour, iPhone & Google Syncing
- Multi-user editing
- Calendar permissions and security
- Offline editing
- Graphics, icons, themes and sticky notes
- Weather
- Rich text
The application, when it ships, will require Mac OS X Leopard and cost $40 per computer. If you already own BusySync, or purchase it before BusyCal ships ($25), you can upgrade to BusyCal for $10.BusyCal brings together calendars and syncing originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 07 Jan 2009 11:00:00 EST.
