Twitter hacking fiasco underscores importance of strong passwords
Filed under: Internet, Security, Web services, web 2.0 It should go without saying at this point, but here it is in plain English one more time: don't use dictionary words for your password. If you're a member of the technical staff of a prominent web 2.0 entity like Twitter, you really ought to know better.
Furthermore, if you're part of the security team for a site like Twitter, you should have some kind of basic measures in place to prevent brute force hacking attempts. It's just common sense.
GMZ, the hacker who compromised several celebrity accounts randomly targeted "Crystal," a Twitter user he just thought to be fairly popular, and he hit the jackpot. She turned out to have access to Twitter's technical tools, and had chosen a password so horribly simple it could have been mentioned in the list from Hackers: happiness.
If you weren't already in doubt about the safety of your various web accounts, this incident should serve as a wake-up call. Since it's not always a priority for a web service to provide protection, do yourself a favor and use a nice, complex password.
And please, for the love of humanity, try not to use dictionary words.

Ford Mustang Cobra Jet rumbles off the assembly line
Filed under: Motorsports, Sports/GTs, Ford
Click above to view the first Cobra Jet coming off the assembly line
The name "Cobra Jet" may remind some of an unfortunate Sam Jackson film, but to Mustang and drag racing enthusiasts it refers to the latest addition to the pony-car family, the Mustang FR500CJ. The drag-racing version of the outgoing Mustang was unveiled at SEMA just a few months ago and is already rolling off the assembly line as the latest model in the Ford Racing line-up.
Featuring a modified 5.4-liter V8 with cold air induction, the Cobra Jet features stainless competition headers, upgraded rear axle and driveshaft, drag-optimized adjustable suspension, and unique wheels wrapped in slicks. Buyers can choose between a six-speed manual or three-speed automatic, and the interior is augmented by racing buckets and short-throw shifter (on the manual version). The vehicles, which receive unique VINs since they aren't street legal, are delivered in body-on-white, with louvered rear window panels. The package presents an affordable and straightforward racing platform for those seeking domination of the quarter-mile. Check it out in the galleries below.

Cadillac One: Details on president-elect Obama?s new limo
Filed under: Etc., Cadillac, Special/Limited Editions One of the perks of being the Commander-in-Chief is getting to ride in the back of a presidential limousine. And while certain presidents have had hand-me-down chariots, President-Elect Barack Obama is set to get a brand-new, high-tech model.
Looking much like a standard Cadillac DTS stretched to the limits, Obama's new ride is an altogether different beast, with the highest levels of protection, technology and luxury a presidential limo has ever seen. Described as "a rolling tank with windows," word is that the limo is actually not a Cadillac, but rather something built on a medium-duty truck chassis.
Spy shooters have captured the limo testing alongside a pair of GMC Topkick pickups, and keen observers have noted that the wheels and rubber appear to be dimensionally identical to those found on the big trucks (the limo sports 19.5-inch Goodyear Regional RHS tires). Bystanders even contend that a the limo sounds like its sporting a diesel engine underhood.
The exterior is an amalgamation of various Cadillac bits, with Escalade headlights flanked by Caddy's corporate grille and a set of taillights pulled from the STS. It's doubtful that all this kit -- and the massive fender flares -- will find their way onto the model bound for the White House car port, but the ultra-thick doors should provide a presidential-sized barrier between POTUS and the outside world. The only question left is whether Obama's code name (Renegade) will carry over when he moves into Pennsylvania Ave. on the 20th, or if it the Secret Service will change it to Caddyman.
Hit the jump to view a video of Obama's new ride in action.Continue reading Cadillac One: Details on president-elect Obama's new limo Cadillac One: Details on president-elect Obama's new limo originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 07 Jan 2009 11:33:00 EST. BusyCal brings together calendars and syncing
Filed under: Macintosh, Web services, Commercial, Beta I'm quite the fan of BusyMac Software's very excellent BusySync application for Mac OS X. It's always been a great (and ridiculously easily ) way to share calendars over your local network using the Mac's built-in zero-config Bonjour technology.
Today at Macworld Expo, the company has announced that an all-new application, BusyCal, is coming later in the year. The application, which is marketed as iCal Pro, promises 'the beauty and simplicity of iCal with the power of BusySync's ... calendar sharing and syncing technology'.
On top of all the regular calendaring that you'd expect, the application will ship with:
- Bonjour, iPhone & Google Syncing
- Multi-user editing
- Calendar permissions and security
- Offline editing
- Graphics, icons, themes and sticky notes
- Weather
- Rich text
The application, when it ships, will require Mac OS X Leopard and cost $40 per computer. If you already own BusySync, or purchase it before BusyCal ships ($25), you can upgrade to BusyCal for $10.BusyCal brings together calendars and syncing originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 07 Jan 2009 11:00:00 EST. Spy Shots: New Porsche 911 GT3 RS
Filed under: Spy Photos, Sports/GTs, Porsche With the coupe, cabrio, targa and turbo variants of the latest Porsche 911 already out on the road, Zuffenhausen is preparing similar updates for its flyweight road rocket, the GT3 RS. Test mules have been spotted roaming the French alps, which in this season would probably be the last place we'd want to drive a rear-engined, rear-wheel-drive track car. But then we're not zany German engineers, now are we?
We can expect that the latest 911 GT3 RS will receive the same updates as its brethren (including the Turbo's LED light strips up front) and be updated with the retro decal stripe and badge graphic down the quarter panel, plus colored wheels, contrasting wing-mirror housings, a big rear wing and an interior roll cage. A carbon fiber rear wing and hood plus a plastic rear window will help keep the weight down versus the conventional 911 Carrera, which should help the new RS hustle to 60 in a scant 4.2 seconds.

EA expands Nintendo focus, announces TWO MySims games for Wii/DS
Filed under: Nintendo DS, Nintendo Wii, Video, Casual Things aren't going so well in the world of EA. Disappointing sales of games like Mirror's Edge and Dead Space have forced the company to restructure, letting go 10% of its workforce. However, we see newfound hope for the company's bottom-line with their latest Nintendo-focused efforts. EA is planning on expanding the MySims franchise with two new games that truly broaden what's possible in gaming.
MySims Party promises to turn any gathering into an "instant party" by offering -- wait for it -- a variety of mini-games to play with. Shake the Wii Remote to partake in 50 mini games, ranging from snowboarding to dancing. The DS version will feature 40 stylus-powered mini games. 2K Games also created a similarly innovative title, which sold over a million copies.
In addition to the wildly-innovative MySims Party, EA has another sure-fire hit on their hands. Nintendo fans will absolutely adore MySims Racing. We don't want to spoil the game's unique offering, so we placed that trailer after the break.Continue reading EA expands Nintendo focus, announces TWO MySims games for Wii/DS EA expands Nintendo focus, announces TWO MySims games for Wii/DS originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 07 Jan 2009 10:28:00 EST. Independent Games Festival 2009 finalists announced
Filed under: Contests, Downloads, Indie It's perhaps the highest profile contest for indie game developers and today the Independent Games Festival announced the finalists for the 2009 edition in several catagories. The games were chosen out of 226 entries this year with the finalists picked by a number of game developers and journalists.
Winning one or more of the awards in the past has lead to bigger things for the games and their creators. Last year's winner of the Seumas McNally Grand Prize (worth $20,000) was Crayon Physics which, ironically, is due to release its commercial version for the PC later today. Hit indie games World of Goo and Audiosurf also won IGF awards last year before being released to great acclaim and sales.
The winners of the 2009 IGF will be announced on March 25 during the Game Developers Conference in San Fransisco. Check out the nominees after the jump:

Level-5: White Knight Chronicles riding into North America
Filed under: Sony PlayStation 3, RPGs
Level-5 CEO Akihiro Hino has confirmed that the PS3's White Knight Chronicles is coming to North America, though no release window has been announced. This should come as good news to JRPG fans, especially those who like having "Chronicles" in their titles.
In an interview with GameTrailers, Hino also dances around the issue of the game's online features and whether cross-region play will be possible. Check out the full interview after the break.

Rendered Speculation: Abarth Roadster stings again
Filed under: Convertibles, Sports/GTs, Euro, FIAT, Rendered Speculation The prospect of a stand-alone model from Abarth has been an on-again, off-again proposition. Currently, the revived label is backed by two models, Punto and 500, essentially upgraded performance versions of existing Fiat models. Interests were piqued, however, when the Fiat performance sub-division opened the doors on its new factory that incorporated space for a small assembly line, said to be earmarked for a standalone model. But then Abarth spokespeople said that wouldn't have been enough to build even a small run of road cars. Rumors then surfaced that the Scorpion marque was to collaborate with Lotus to come out with an Elise-based roadster. Now the rumor-millers at Auto Express have rendered their own idea of what form a dedicated Abarth sportscar could - or in their view, should - look like.
Rather than outsourcing to Lotus, AE thinks producing a unique two-seater based on the existing 500 would be more on the money. That'd mean a front-engine/front-wheel-drive setup, with the 1.4-liter turbo four carrying over in both standard (135hp) and "esse-esse" (158hp) spec. A lower center of gravity, lower curb weight and even more compact body, complete with removable roof panel, would keep the standalone Abarth nimble, while Ferrari-esque gizmos like the Fiat group's Torque Transfer Control (TTC) e-diff and shift-lights on the flat-bottomed steering wheel would help the fortunate driver keep the power under control. Of course this is all speculation and a bit of wishful thinking, but that doesn't remove it from the realm of possibility.
