Bush declines to enact higher fuel-economy standards

Fuel efficiency. It's an issue that has seemingly fallen onto America's the back-burner for a variety of reasons, not the least of which are declining fuel prices and economy along with the auto industry's financial plight. Still, few would argue that the issue of cutting down on petroleum use is any less important today than it was six months ago, so the decision (or, really, the lack thereof) of the Bush Administration to leave future fuel economy standards on the table for President-Elect Barack Obama and his future staff is ruffling a few feathers.

Even the automakers themselves would like to see a new set of rules decided upon so that they can accurately plan for the future. Without the passing of Bush's bill, questions remain as to whether states - especially California - will have the right to impose their own regulations above the national requirements. Oh, and there's also the issue of where the money to develop these fuel efficient technologies will come from. See the official statement from the US Department of Transportation after the break.

CES 2009: SYNC could one day add app development like iPhone

Ford's head of electronics told Autoblog today that the future of SYNC is already in the works, including the possibility of one day opening up the platform to the developer community.

Jim Buczkowski, Ford's director of electronics and electrical systems said he sees SYNC as a platform on which creative innovation could be built. He said if such a developer program were ever to be implemented, it would work much like Apple's program where outside developers build apps that would be evaluated by Ford before being made available to customers. Buczkowski said the first priority in evaluating apps, though, would be to ensure safety for drivers.

There are no definite plans for a "SYNC SDK" anytime soon, but it is an indication that Ford is busy working to keep SYNC ahead of the competition.

Ford's Executive Vice President Mark Fields told us in another CES interview that with SYNC, Ford is now able to behave more like a technology company than an automotive company. New sheet metal takes much longer to design and implement than a software update that would give Ford owners many new features. To keep up the innovative pace, Fields said they seek input from customers in the blogospheres, focus groups and from Ford's SYNC My Ride Web site.

Mio launches four new Moov navigators at CES

There's no Turbo Boost or anything involved with this bunch, but Mio has launched four mildly interesting navigators for 2009. The new Moovs all sport an improved "Spirit" software platform, and while the S300 features a 3.5-inch panel, text-to-speech and 12 million POIs, the S500 steps up to a 4.7-inch panel. The Moov S556 keeps the same 4.7-inch display but adds in Bluetooth and Junction View, while the S700 breaks out a 7-inch panel. The whole lot is supposed to ship before the second half of this year for $199.99, $249.99, $299.99 and $299.99 in order of mention.

Smartparts introduces four new new digiframes from 2.4- to 19-inches

Smartparts is really aiming to span the full range of things here at CES by announcing four new digital photo frames that range from 2.4- to 19-inches in size. Starting on the small side, we've got the 2.4-inch SP24PC and 3.5-inch SP35PC, both of which tout touch sensitive screens and feature a 320 x 240 resolution. The only difference between the two is the amount of internal storage; the former holds around 50 images while the latter holds 100. Moving up significantly is the 10-inch SPX10WF (800 x 600 resolution) and the 19-inch SPX19WF (1,448 x 880), which tout one-push internet setup, automatic image correction and built-in WiFi modules. All four are slated to ship in March for $29.99, $39.99, $199.99 and $299.99 in order of mention. Full releases are after the break.

CES 2009: Zmak would love to show us all 12 hours of Prototype

It might have meant nothing when Radical CEO Kelly Zmak told us that "he'd love to show [us] all 12 hours of Prototype." Maybe he didn't mean that the average gamer would get 12 hours out of the game. Maybe that's the time he's shaved his speed runs down to, maybe he just misspoke, we don't know.

But, for what it's worth, he mentioned 12 hours and Prototype, and we're delivering that knowledge factory fresh to your dome. Do with it what you will.

Gateway?s MD / UC Series laptops get reviewed

The ink is still drying from Gateway's introduction of the MD / UC Series, but already both machines have been thoroughly tested and reviewed. Starting with the more mainstream MD7801u, Gateway trimmed a number of features in hopes of producing a lower-cost machine that bargain-minded buyers would take interest in. To that end, there was nothing really remarkable about the MD, but that's exactly what the company was going for; all in all, it ended up as a solid, well-rounded rig that should handle basic tasks with ease. Moving down (size wise, anyway), the UC was deemed "incredibly stylish," and it was found to be impressive in pretty much every testable aspect. Of course, it won't handle gaming or hardcore video editing, but given the $799 price tag, we know you weren't expecting it to. Feel 'em both out in the read links below.
