Macworld 2009: IPEVO shows off photo frames and more
Filed under: Macworld, Accessories, Hardware
Peripheral vendor IPEVO may have just dipped a toe in the Mac market last year with compatible iChat and Skype speakerphone devices, but it looks like a full-court press coming from them in 2009. At Macworld Expo, IPEVO is showing a full suite of audio (conference phones, handsets and more for VoIP services and iChat), video (a slimline camera) and especially photos -- the upcoming Kaleida digital frames, showing here and at CES, look remarkably good. The wired and wireless frames, expected to ship in March under the $200 price point, allow for photo offloads from memory cards or from the Mac, subscription to Flickr or RSS feeds, and selected Google widgets (weather, calendar, news or financial data), all on a bright 7" screen. You can control the displayed content from your computer, or via a handy iPhone app. We took a brief photo and video tour of the new products in the Dr. Bott vendor pavilion. Enjoy! New Flock screenshots flock out from Capcom
Filed under: Downloads, Casual, Puzzle, Screenshots
Capcom continues their media burst from CES today with a whopping 25 new screenshots from Flock, their first downloadable game for 2009. The game from developer Proper Games is due out this February and looks to be something that's out of the norm for a Capcom published title.
As we have mentioned before your task is your herd a number of farm animals, Lemmings-style, into a UFO through a series of puzzle-filled levels. While the game is scheduled for release next month there's been no word yet on pricing. We just hope Capcom released the PC version in a more timely manner than they did with the PC release of Age of Booty...which we are still waiting on, by the way.

Caffeinated Performance: Fill ?er up? with Starbucks?!
Filed under: Etc., Green, Tech If researchers at the University of Nevada prove successful, America's growing caffeine addiction may have at least one major plus side. Apparently, used coffee grounds are between 10- and 15 percent oil, and that's a potential source of energy. Even better, the oil is apparently easy to extract, so experts suggest that the resulting biodiesel could be priced as low as $1 dollar a gallon, which is quite a bit better than what petroleum-based diesel fuel is selling for, even after recent price drops.
Sure, there may not be enough spent coffee beans around the world to completely displace our dependence on petroleum, but every little bit helps. Perhaps the best bit of news is that the fuel retains its coffee smell, and that's reason enough for us to get behind the idea. Thanks for the tip, Luke!

On that same date, Atari will release the long awaited retail store version of the game that will contain the core title and all of the expansions.
The new expansion is titled Apocrypha and is described in the press release as the "most ambitious EVE expansion in the game's over five year history". New modular ships will be added to this new expansion along with wormholes in space that will take players to new and unexplored areas of the game's universe. Skate 2 dev diary talks online modes
Filed under: News We know you were all excited to try out Skate 2's online modes in the recently released demo. Thus, we also know that you were devastated to find out the demo doesn't have online modes. We'd like to tell you that we've magically enabled online play so you could try it out, but you'll just have to settle for a developer diary video instead. In said dev diary, Skate 2 online producer Brian Lindley discusses the various online modes. Among these modes are Hall of Meat, in which players compete for the most damaging bail. Players can also engage in Freeskate Activities, which are simple challenges in which all online players can compete. Finally, there's Create A Spot, which allows players to create their own custom skating spots, which can then be uploaded for other players to try.
Especially neat is that players can jump from the single player game world straight to online at any time right from the pause menu. Very slick. Skate 2 debuts later this month. Time Warner intrigued by games industry, says CFO
Filed under: Business
Time Warner Chief Financial Officer John Martin said that the company's water-testing acquisition of Traveller's Tales has been "wildly successful" and it wants more. In a call with investors, Martin expressed that the gaming industry "intrigues" Time Warner, but that there's nothing "right now of any scale" that it's going to acquire.
Time Warner may not be doing any game company acquisitions at the moment, but it has made some maneuvers in the space. Most recently, it's invested in Turbine (Lord of the Rings Online) and Eidos. We'll have to wait and see if the siren call of gaming turns Time Warner's intrigue into lustful desire.
[Disclosure: Time Warner owns AOL which, in turn, owns Joystiq ... which means Time Warner also owns our wildly successful publishing arm, Joystiq Games. Well ... soon-to-be wildly successful, as soon as our debut title, Imagine Vin Diesel Kart Racerz: The Fast and the Curious, hits the market.]

New Starcraft 2 screenshots; vote for your favorite Dark Templar
Filed under: RTS, Screenshots, Starcaft II
Blizzard continues to sneak out new screenshots for Starcraft II. The official web site for the upcoming sci-fi RTS game just added three more new screenshots which we have added to our gallery of visuals for the game.
Not only that but the web site is giving you the chance to pick which version of the Protoss unit Dark Templar will be put into the final game. You can see the two different versions right here. One has more of a costume look while the other exposes more of the alien's form. You can vote for either one or you can vote to have both models in the game (it would be generated randomly when you decide to build one in the game).

New screens and a trailer for Prototype
Filed under: News click to enlarge (minus the hilarious speech bubble)
Activision has dropped some new screens and a brand new trailer for Prototype, its upcoming mutant-powered destruct-o-thon. Every new screen has one thing in common: All of them are dripping with blood or some other variety of viscous goo. The trailer has its fair share of liquid life as well. Oh, and the video also features someone taking out a helicopter by throwing a person at it (that seems familiar somehow). See the glorious, gory action after the break and check out the new screens in the gallery below.
If all that's not enough for you, you can also check out a new preview at IGN.

iDeaS Nintendo DS emulator updated, works well
Filed under: Fun, Games, Windows, Freeware, Windows x64 My four year old son (not me, of course) can't get enough of the monochrome greatness that is our collection of old Gameboy cartridges. The Gameboy, however, has taken a dirt nap and he's had to learn to play them in VirtualBoy on my laptop.
What about newer games? What if your DS happened to get crushed under a truck tire and you were left with a pile of games you couldn't play?
The iDeaS emulator's latest version would be one solution. With the release of v1.0.2.8 frame rates have improved greatly and several bugs have been fixed that make the emu extremely usable.
Of the half dozen roms I tested (all of which I own, of course), I didn't note any major issues. There were a few cutscenes that didn't render fully and some momentary choppiness, but nothing that made the games unplayable.
iDeaS worked nicely on both my systems, one running Vista Home Premium and the other with Ultimate x64.
It's a free download for Windows and should, of course, be used to play only roms of games that you own - not ones that you download from, say, Pirate Bay.iDeaS Nintendo DS emulator updated, works well originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 08 Jan 2009 17:00:00 EST. 2009 Aprilia SMV 750 Dorsoduro makes U.S. debut
Filed under: Motorcycles
Click above for a high-res gallery of the 2009 Aprilia Dorsoduro 750
The supermoto genre may have initially emerged when people began spooning 17-inch wheels and tires from road-going sportbikes in place of the larger-diameter hoops with knobbies that their dirtbikes came with from the factory, but things have certainly diverged from there. There's a big difference between single-cylinder machines like the Suzuki DR-Z400SM and much larger bikes like the Ducati Hypermotard, despite the fact that both platforms are said to fulfill a similar purpose. Aprilia recently joined the ranks of manufacturers going after the higher-end supermoto category, and the SMV 750 Dorsoduro is finally set to join the firm's other lighter-weight supermoto machine, the SXV550, in the American market.
Aprilia's self-developed liquid-cooled V-Twin engine displaces 750cc in this application and offers up 92-horsepower, making it a natural competitor for the air-cooled 1100cc Hypermotard from Ducati. Suspension and braking bits are suitably up to the task, with 43mm inverted front forks holding wave-shaped disc brakes clamped by radial calipers. Wheelies and stoppies are sure to ensue. Get yours now in either black or red for $9,599.
